How Much Rated Power is Enough for my Diesel Generator Set? Some Suggestions From HUAQUAN Power's Technicians
A proper amount of power margin is vital for diesel generators’ lifespan, running efficiency, and reliability. Here are some technicians’ advice from HUAQUAN Power on this matter.
The recommended power margin for emergency backup power supply is 10%~20%. This amount will be enough to handle the current surge caused by instantaneous startup as well as the running efficiency of the unit.
The recommended power margin for continuous primary power supply is 20%~30%. Having the unit operating with excessive load for a long period of time can make the unit overheat and bring more wear and tear. A higher amount of power margin will help maintain the durability of the set.
For special usages that demand much higher startup current, the recommended power margin is 30%~50%. This standard applies to appliances such as water pumps, air compressors whose startup current can be 3 times of the rated current of the set. A soft starter or frequency converter is recommended to use together in order to buffer the instant surge.
Here are some key factors that should be considered when choosing the power margin for the generator set. Devices with resistive load such as lighting equipment and heating equipment require a lower power margin (10%). When it comes to devices with inductive load such as motor and transformer, it is necessary to recalculate their startup power accordingly. With each 1000-meter increase in altitude, the output power of the generator set drops 10%. If the temperature is above 40 degrees Celsius, it will also drop 10%. Hence, more power margin is needed in these two cases.
Having insufficient power margin can be troublesome. It can trigger the protection device to shut down the running unit and cause a power shortage. Continuously running the generator at full load will cause the cylinder block and the crankshaft aging more rapidly and shortening the lifespan of the unit altogether. It will also decrease the fuel efficiency and deteriorate the emission (black smoke, excessive carbon deposits) of the generator set.
