Considerations for selection of oilfield generators
When selecting generators for oil fields, a comprehensive evaluation is required:
Power:
Determine total load: Calculate the total power of all electrical equipment and consider the starting current (especially high-power motors).
Reserved redundancy: Typically, generators that are 20% -30% higher than the calculated total load are selected to cope with future equipment additions and ensure that the unit does not operate at full load for extended periods of time.
Fuel type: Diesel is the absolute mainstream. In areas with abundant natural gas, gas-fired generators can also be considered, but with higher safety requirements.
Voltage and frequency: Choose according to the requirements of the main equipment, commonly 400/230V 50Hz (Chinese standard) or 480/277V 60Hz (North American standard). Large oil fields may also use medium voltage such as 6.6kV or 11kV.
Environmental conditions: Clearly define the maximum/minimum temperature, altitude, humidity, and whether the work site is in an explosion-proof area, which will affect the power output of the engine and the selection of the unit.

Suggestions for maintenance of oilfield generators
The principle of '70% utilization, 30% maintenance' is vividly reflected in oilfield generators.
Daily operations:
Operators need to undergo professional training.
Check the oil, fuel, and coolant levels before starting.
Observe whether the instrument parameters (oil pressure, water temperature, voltage, frequency, etc.) during operation are normal.
Regular maintenance:
Daily: Check the air filter, drain the water from the fuel filter and oil-water separator.
Weekly/Monthly: Change the engine oil and oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter (depending on the environmental dust situation).
Every six months/year: Conduct a comprehensive inspection, including cleaning the cooling system, checking and adjusting valve clearances, testing the control system and automatic transfer switch, etc.

More concerns for users of oilfield generators
1、Why can't oilfield generators start after being idle for a long time in cold seasons or equipment?
Possible reasons and solutions:
Insufficient battery power or corroded connectors
Solution: Check the battery voltage, use a charger to charge or replace the battery. Clean and tighten the battery terminals to ensure a secure connection.
Starting motor or control system malfunction
Solution: Check the starting relay, fuse, and wiring. Listen for a "click" sound when starting but the motor does not turn, it may be a fault in the starting motor itself and needs to be repaired or replaced.
Fuel system issues (most common)
Fuel depletion or clogged fuel lines: Check the fuel tank level, remove air from the fuel lines (manually pump oil), and replace the fuel filter.
Oil line condensation (winter): Use lower grade anti condensation diesel, install a fuel heater, or add diesel anticoagulant to the fuel tank.
Oil delivery pump malfunction: Check if the oil delivery pump is working properly.
The ambient temperature is too low
Solution: Use engine oil and diesel that match the local minimum temperature. Install cylinder block heater and oil pan heater to preheat the engine before starting.
2、Why do we require customers to perform a tightening work on all electrical contacts every 200 hours of operation of the unit?
The diesel generator set belongs to the vibration working device. Moreover, many domestically produced or assembled units that require double nuts are useless. The use of spring washers is useless. Once the electrical fasteners loosen, it will generate a large contact resistance, leading to abnormal operation of the unit.
3、What are the reasons and solutions for sudden shutdown of oilfield generators during operation?
Possible reasons and solutions:
Protection system action
Low oil pressure shutdown: Check the oil level, oil quality, and oil filter. Check the oil pump.
High water temperature shutdown: Check the coolant level and clean the dust and debris on the outer surface of the radiator (very important!). Check if the fan belt is loose or broken, and check if the water pump is working properly.
Overspeed/overclocking shutdown: Check the electronic or mechanical governor.
Fuel interruption
Solution: Check if the fuel is used up and if the oil circuit is blocked by impurities or water.

Solution: Check if there is a short circuit in the main circuit and if the control system circuit is loose.
4、Why does our company generally not recommend users to use neutral grounding during installation since 2002?
1) The self-regulation function of the new generation generator has been greatly enhanced;
2) In practice, it has been found that the lightning fault rate of neutral point grounded units is relatively high.
3) The grounding quality requires high standards.
4) A unit with a neutral grounding point will mask the leakage faults and grounding errors of the load, which cannot be exposed under high current power supply conditions in the city.
